Naan bread with charred spots and melted butter

Soft Indian naan bread with yogurt – perfect alongside curry. Makes about 6–8 breads.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Crumble the yeast into a bowl and dissolve it in the lukewarm water.
  2. Add the yogurt, oil, sugar, and salt.
  3. Gradually work in the flour until you have a smooth dough.
  4. Knead the dough for about 5–10 minutes (by hand or using a stand mixer).
  5. Cover with a tea towel and let the dough rise for about 1 hour.
  6. Divide the dough into 6–8 pieces and roll each out into oval or round flatbreads.
  7. Cook the breads in a hot, dry skillet (preferably cast iron) for about 1–2 minutes per side until nicely blistered and browned.
  8. Optional: Brush with melted butter, crushed garlic, and chopped fresh cilantro for garlic naan.
