Dutch stamppot with mashed potato, kale and sausage

A traditional Dutch dish consisting of mashed potatoes mixed with other cooked vegetables, often served with smoked sausage or bacon. It's a hearty and warming side dish perfect for cold weather.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Peel potatoes and cut them into large, even-sized pieces. Place them in a large pot.
  2. Wash and chop the chosen vegetable (e.g., kale) and add it on top of the potatoes in the pot. Lightly salt.
  3. Add just enough water to cover the bottom of the pot (about 1-2 cm). Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until both potatoes and vegetables are tender.
  4. While potatoes and vegetables are cooking, prepare the smoked sausage according to package instructions (often simmered in water or baked).
  5. Once cooked, drain the potatoes and vegetables thoroughly. Return them to the hot pot.
  6. Add milk, butter, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg.
  7. Mash the potatoes and vegetables together using a potato masher until well combined. The mixture should still have some texture, not completely smooth.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  9. Serve hot, often with a 'kuiltje' (little well) in the center of the stamppot filled with some gravy or cooking liquid from the sausage, alongside slices of smoked sausage.
